CONCEPT
The design for STEMstein adopts an industrial-modernist approach, utilizing high-contrast volumes to define a multi-functional educational environment. By exposing the mechanical systems and finishing the ceiling in a matte obsidian, the architectural envelope recedes, allowing the vibrant pops of color and geometric graphics to define the program. The concept prioritizes transparency and visual connectivity, using expansive glazing to bridge the gap between administrative work and active learning.
The floor plan is organized around the idea of "transparent learning." Glass partitions are used as functional canvases, featuring integrated graphics that offer privacy while maintaining a sense of openness. This allows natural light to penetrate deep into the interior, illuminating the wood-textured flooring and creating a warm, grounded atmosphere that balances the technical, industrial overhead elements.
The materiality reflects a balance of professionalism and play. Commercial-grade surfaces—from the custom powder-coated desk frames to the acoustic ceiling treatments—ensure durability for a high-traffic environment. The use of linear, suspended lighting provides a rhythmic overhead logic, drawing the eye through the space and reinforcing the center’s focus on structured discovery and modern innovation.
